What sustainability innovations will Tierra del Sol Resort embrace?

By: November 11, 2025

In today’s world, as you explore the advancements in sustainable golf course and club operations, you’ll discover a wealth of inspiring innovations that are paving the way for a greener future.

Here are some examples:

  • Use of soil moisture sensors, weather-data-linked controllers, and smart irrigation to deliver water only when and where needed.
  • Adoption of integrated pest management (IPM): fewer pesticides, more biological/natural controls.
  • Designing portions of the course with “naturalised” zones (less intensive turf) to reduce mowing, inputs, and disturbance.
  • Clubhouses and maintenance buildings built or retrofitted for energy efficiency, featuring LED lighting, insulation, and HVAC optimization. See Costa Navarino‘s example!

  • On-site renewable energy: solar panels, sometimes wind/geothermal, to offset grid electricity.
  • Electrification of golf carts and grounds vehicles; whole-course operations increasingly using low- or zero-emission equipment.
  • Use of native plantings around fairways, natural zones, and bird/insect habitat creation.
  • Courses designed or remodelled to include ecological corridors, wetlands, and pollinator zones.
  • When constructing or remodeling a course, use efficient earthworks, locally sourced or recycled materials, and minimize disturbance to existing habitats.
  • Master-planning with long lifecycle in mind: fewer high-maintenance zones, strategic use of native areas, anticipating climate change/resilience.

These are some of the popular innovations for which you can find solutions, even here on Golf Business Monitor.

While I may not be sharing anything groundbreaking, if any of these ideas are new to you, it’s time to consider how you can implement them seriously.

Don’t hesitate to take action and make these changes happen.

Which of these innovations did Tierra del Sol Resort implement?

After 13 months of thoughtful restoration, the Tierra del Sol Golf Course (Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, opened in 1995) has reopened—not only renewed in form, but reimagined in purpose.

In partnership with the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, this celebrated course has undergone a transformation that goes far beyond fairways and greens.

It is now a living example of how sport, ecology, and community can thrive together.

The renovation was meticulous and meaningful, featuring sweeping bunker reductions and reshaping to blend more seamlessly with Aruba’s natural landscape.

A comprehensive redesign of irrigation systems was implemented to conserve and utilize water more efficiently, while restoring tees and greens across all 18 holes enhanced play quality while minimizing environmental impact.

But perhaps the most inspiring chapter of this story belongs to one remarkable resident—the Shoco Owl.

The Shoco, Aruba’s national bird, has faced profound habitat loss due to development across the island.

Yet, Tierra del Sol has long offered a safe haven—a rare stronghold for nesting pairs who rely on open desert landscapes to thrive.

With this restoration, the course has expanded and protected the Shoco’s nesting grounds, increasing available habitat on the property by an extraordinary 80%.

This is an excellent reminder that sustainability is not simply a responsibility—it is an opportunity to restore beauty, encourage life, and create a legacy that lasts far beyond the final putt.
