Today, responsible golf clubs committed to sustainability have the opportunity to select from three prominent sustainability programs:
- The GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf offers a comprehensive certification program that encompasses various aspects, including ecological preservation, water management, energy efficiency, supply chain integrity, pollution mitigation, and community engagement.
- Additionally, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program is a voluntary initiative that helps golf courses plan, implement, and document environmental projects.
- The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service provides specialized support to promote sustainable practices within the agronomy sector of the golf industry.
Currently, there are 33 GEO Certified golf clubs in Portugal. The Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort has opted for an alternative course and will now enter into a collaboration with The R&A’s Sustainable Agronomy Service.
This information is noteworthy because the adjacent West Cliffs Links Golf Club, owned by the same proprietor as Praia D’El Rey, holds GEO Certification.

As the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into decision-making processes becomes increasingly standard, organizations are subject to elevated expectations regarding transparency and accountability.
This shift is driving significant transformation across various industries. The golf industry, along with golf club enterprises, is similarly affected.
Investment in sustainability innovations is growing significantly, especially in advanced technologies designed to reduce emissions and promote circular economies.

Praia D’El Rey & R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service cooperation
The partnership aims to enhance turf health through the innovative application of soil science and data-driven agronomy, guiding maintenance operations with expertise.
It strives to implement transformative water conservation practices and champion efficient water usage.
Furthermore, it commits to providing insightful guidance on strategic investments in both machinery and infrastructure, while nurturing the exceptional turf conditions that define the resort’s esteemed reputation.
This is achieved through a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
Paul Woodham, Head of Agronomy Europe at The R&A, added:
““The investments being made – particularly within the maintenance workshop, such as the new grinder, the Vibramaster for improved fairway infiltration, and the autonomous Husqvarna fairway mowers – represent a major step forward.
These are the kinds of innovations that embody a sustainable and forward-thinking agronomic strategy.”
