What are the notable sustainability achievements of Yas Links & Yas Acres?

By: August 1, 2025

The golf industry is experiencing a remarkable transformation towards greener operations, especially in 2025.

Data-driven resource management, wildlife-focused restoration, plastic reduction, and community-led conservation are becoming the new standard.

With certifications like GEO leading the way, clubs are setting a powerful example by achieving measurable environmental performance.

In many cases, I witness the inspiring impact of sustainability best practices, exemplified by the recently GEO Certified Yas Links Abu Dhabi and Yas Acres Golf & Country Club:

  • Sensor-based, ET-driven irrigation systems coupled with drought-resistant grasses.
  • Solar‑powered facilities (e.g. panels on clubhouses and charging stations), electric maintenance equipment, and cart fleets.
  • Habitat restoration projects, such as native wildflower planting, wetlands, pollinator zones, and wildlife corridors.
  • Programs promoting player engagement include “green days,” refillable bottle stations, and carbon-impact tracking apps.

Both Yas Links Abu Dhabi and Yas Acres Golf & Country Club have been commended for their exemplary commitment to environmental stewardship, effective resource management, and active community involvement.

At Yas Links Abu Dhabi, initiatives such as

  • utilizing treated sewage effluent (TSE) for irrigation,
  • restoring native dune and mangrove habitats, and
  • conducting comprehensive irrigation audits have significantly decreased water usage while enhancing local biodiversity.

Similarly, Yas Acres Golf & Country Club has made notable strides with its

  • desert-adapted landscaping,
  • thoughtful reduction of turf areas, and
  • dedicated efforts in supporting local wildlife habitats.

Notably, they have documented 94 bird species, including 7 that are globally recognized as threatened or endangered.

These efforts reflect a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental well-being.

Both clubs are poised to embrace growth by focusing on key areas for improvement identified in the review, such as

  • enhancing waste tracking and communication,
  • increasing the use of renewable energy, and
  • promoting ecological education.
Inclusivity & Outreach

This certification highlights the inspiring commitment both clubs have to inclusivity and outreach.

Yas Links actively engages local youth and schools in vital environmental education and conservation.

At the same time, Yas Acres leads the way with community-driven initiatives, such as

  • the annual Pink Run for breast cancer awareness and
  • the newly launched Get into Golf program, which invites newcomers to embrace the game through structured coaching and community participation.

Best practices for sustainability to consider

  • Precision irrigation systems, such as GPS-guided and sensor-based systems, enable targeted watering, thereby reducing water waste.
  • Drought-resistant turfgrass: Development and use of grass varieties (like Bermudagrass hybrids or zoysiagrass) that require less water.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Focuses on biological and cultural controls before resorting to chemical treatments.
  • Organic and microbial fertilizers: Lower environmental impact and improve long-term soil health.
  • Robotic and drone sprayers: Enable ultra-precise application of inputs, reducing overall chemical usage.
  • Geothermal heating/cooling systems in newer or renovated clubhouses.
  • Pollinator zones and wildflower meadows: Reduce mowing and promote biodiversity. See Syngenta’s Operation Pollinator!
  • Minimalist design philosophy: Less earth movement, fewer inputs, and better integration with natural landscapes.
  • Bunker and green renovations: Rebuilding with liners and new construction methods to reduce maintenance and resource use.
  • Drivable turf surfaces (e.g., turf or stabilized paths instead of concrete).
  • Sustainable procurement: Buying locally and choosing low-impact materials and foods.
  • Zero-waste goals: Composting, recycling programs, and digital scorecards.
