It’s always fascinating to see how sporting goods manufacturers continually find innovative materials to improve performance and our overall playing experience.
While this applies to many brands, TaylorMade stands out, especially after reading the technical specifications for their latest P790 iron.

What’s the story with the latest TaylorMade P790 irons? TaylorMade has utilized the new 4340M steel, a low alloy that strikes an outstanding balance between high strength and solid toughness.
This alloy offers impressive fatigue resistance, making it well-suited for applications where durability and endurance are crucial.
Its excellent transverse ductility and creep characteristics also contribute to its impact strength and overall fracture resistance, making it a reliable choice for golfers.
The advancements in this material result in a 20% increase in strength, enabling engineers to create thinner and more aerodynamic faces than earlier models.
This enhancement also boosts
- the coefficient of restitution (COR),
- increasing ball speeds and
- extended carry distances for golfers.

Compared to the previous TaylorMade P790 irons model, using 4340M material allows golfers to realize up to a 24% larger sweet spot (Comparison vs. 2023 TaylorMade P790 7-iron.).
This translates to a consistent distance from the top of the set to the bottom.
A key objective in designing the TaylorMade P790 irons was to provide an outstanding feel and sound.
Each iron head has been meticulously crafted using T-modal analysis to manage the frequencies that ultimately shape the impact experience, ensuring a satisfying response with every swing.
TaylorMade has introduced the all-new P·790 irons, which are touted as some of the most stable irons the brand has ever produced.
This stability is attributed to strategically repositioning up to 40 grams of tungsten within the club.
The design incorporates FLTD CG™ technology, which optimally locates the center of gravity (CG) lower in the long irons to enhance launch and playability.
The Center of Gravity is positioned progressively higher in the shorter irons, allowing for improved control over spin, distance, and trajectory.
This thoughtful redistribution of tungsten weighting in the long irons lowers the CG, contributing to better overall performance on the course.

As the set progresses from the 7-iron onwards, the tungsten weight shifts closer to the club’s toe.
This adjustment increases stability and the moment of inertia (MOI) in the middle of the set, boosting forgiveness and ensuring consistent distance and overall performance.
However, tungsten is not incorporated into the 8-iron through pitching wedge, allowing the center of gravity (CG) to be positioned higher in the head, which improves control.
The Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction incorporates cleverly designed honeycombed cutouts across the internal back wall, effectively removing excess weight from above the strike zone.
Thanks to it, engineers could strategically position more weight lower in the clubhead, resulting in enhanced and consistent performance characteristics.
Essentially, the mass placement in each club has been optimized for improved results.

Additionally, the 4-7 irons feature a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™, which expands the sweet spot towards the lower part of the face where mishits are most common.
This enhancement protects ball speeds, leading to more consistent distance regardless of strike quality.
Furthermore, SpeedFoam™ Air fills the hollow body construction of TaylorMade P790 irons, providing golfers with the crisp and responsive feel they seek.
