What kind of golf course should Tom Doak design for La Zagaleta to impress golfers?

Luxury in 2023 is more about aspiration, connection to life events, a moment in time, or lifestyle. Aspirations are diversifying, and golf clubs/resorts must attract new customers while catering to the existing customer base.

Bain says the global luxury market could hit €570 billion by 2030 — more than double its size in 2020. Asia and Europe remain key growth drivers.

Delivering exclusive and personalized experiences to golfers is core to any luxury golf club/resort. This also explains why there are only 420 homes on 900 hectares in La Zagaleta instead of the 3,000 in the original plan.

More than 260 have now been built, with a total area of 3,000 and 10,000 m2 and prices ranging
from 3 to 34 million euros.

Its residents are executives and successful professionals from

  • the United Kingdom (28%),
  • Germany (12%),
  • Switzerland, Denmark and northern Europe (18%).

La Zagaleta has already got two 18-hole golf courses

  • Old Course: Opened at the end of 1993. So far, it is the preferred golf course of La Zagaleta, created and designed by the Californian architect Bradford Benz,
  • New Course: was designed in 2005 by Gaunt & Marnoch. Until 2021, it maintained the same privacy policy as the New Course. Currently, it provides the opportunity for a limited number of players to be able to use it for only 3 hours per day and on a limited number of days per year. This allows us to preserve that exclusivity and low density that has always characterized La Zagaleta.

La Zagaleta: Tom Doak’s 1st design in Spain

Tom Doak is spearheading an exhilarating golf project within the Sotogrande vicinity. His mission is to create either an 18-hole or 36-hole golf course at “Valderrama II”.

Tom Doak is an excellent choice if you wish to have an authentic, challenging (but still fun to play), and meaningful golf course. People value meaning. Luxury is all about meaning. They play on golf courses that have meaning for them regarding desires, values, feelings, and mental images.

Have you heard of ‘bucket list’ trips? I am sure there are many golfers who would like to visit golf courses designed by famous golf architects such as Tom Doak, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Pete Dye, Ben Crensaw, A.W. Tillinghast, Tom Fazio, etc.

La Zagaleta will need such a golf course to strengthen or improve its position against competitors such as Finca Cortesin, La Reserva Sotogrande, Real Club Valderrama, etc.

This will be Tom Doak’s first design project in Spain and the second in Continental Europe (Grand St Emilionnais Golf Club in France).

Valderrama 07, a subsidiary company of Zagaleta Group, is considering the MAJARAMBUZ brand for its entire golf development. It is committed to this project being considered one of Continental Europe’s most exclusive golf clubs.
