I look forward to seeing how the organizers of the 2022 Porsche European Open deal with the challenges posed by the pandemic. What can they offer to make us feel better on the spot, but even if we follow the event from home?
Just like in the last 4 years, the 2022 Porsche European Open will be held at the Green Eagle Golf Courses Club near Hamburg from 2 to 5 June 2022.
Fan engagement challenges – 2022 Porsche European Open
The tournament day experience has changed quite a lot in the last couple of years. Fans are not just viewers anymore, but more and more participants of the events. They are posting, or making live videos (e.g. Facebook Live, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.) for various reasons:
- To show the world they are at a golf tournament,
- To communicate with their friends and family,
- To create memories of the event for themselves.
Actually, these fans are the best source of marketing a host can dream about. This is why it is so important to develop and provide access to attractive opportunities for experiences during the event that is in line with the fans’ expectations, needs, and goals.
These experiences should be unique to the host venue of the golf tournament.
In 2020, we spent almost $200 billion via our mobiles. At this moment I have not found any mobile application for the 2022 Porsche European Open nor of the golf club.
This is why I think a mobile application that provides personalized information and services (e.g. F&B, player statistics, listening to the commentary, helping to discover the facilities, programs of the club and the event, etc.) can enhance the fan experience and exceed fans’ expectations.
In the last couple of years, the adoption of streaming services skyrocketed (41% growth). Services like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. have enjoyed rapid growth. 45% of sports fans globally are currently exclusively paying for streaming services (Source: 2021 Sports Video Trends Report).
Can we expect to enjoy the 2022 Porsche European Open via any of the streaming service providers’ platforms?
The above-mentioned study says that by 2026 sports fans will make up only a 28% customer share of the global broadcast TV market. Most of these sports fans are watching sports events via their smartphones and/or smart TVs. Are we ready for the change?
I am sure the sponsors will be happy too as their ads will be seen by a much bigger audience. What is sure is that Sky Sports will cover the event:
- Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.,
- Sunday from 12.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and
- Monday from 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Now let’s see what are the key information about the 2022 Porsche European Open.
