How is Newquay Golf Club using EcoBunker to make its bunkers more durable?

Sustainable bunker specialists EcoBunker have successfully completed the first phase of enhancements at Newquay Golf Club.

This phase involved replacing 13 bunkers with their innovative EcoBunker Advanced revetted synthetic bunker technology, which offers improved aesthetics and functionality for the course.

The Newquay Golf Club offers a beautifully re-designed links course by Harry Colt, proudly overlooking Fistral Beach.

This stunning location provides a dynamic experience. The course is open to the refreshing elements of the ocean, making each round of golf both challenging and stimulating.

Recognizing the course’s unique features and challenges, Dan Kendle, Head Greenkeeper at Newquay Golf Club, proactively sought a solution to enhance the experience for his members and the maintenance teams.

While there were some initial concerns about introducing a synthetic solution into the natural environment, Dan took a proactive approach by collaborating with the EcoBunker team to install a test bunker on the 18th hole.

The response from members was highly encouraging, and the installation harmoniously complemented the natural landscape.

Building on this successful trial, the first phase of 13 bunkers has now been completed, with plans for an additional 27 bunkers to be installed across the next two phases.

This project demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the course while respecting its natural beauty. Dan Kendle says

“From a greenkeeper’s perspective it’s the small things that make a difference, like being able to get a tighter cut on top of the bunkers and to shift our focus on to greens tees and fairways where bunkers previously took up so much of our time.

The club is making a big investment, but these bunkers will outlast my time at the club, and will ultimately pay for themselves in reduced maintenance and improving the way the course plays.”
