In 2018, I presented at the Share Algarve conference in Vilamoura and stayed at the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort.
The hotel’s incorporation of local culture and Portuguese design into its architecture and proximity to the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course (Arnold Palmer design) made a lasting impression on my wife and me.
The usage of more natural materials (e.g., cork, clay, stone) and Portugal’s long tradition of crafts (e.g., hand-painted ceramics, weaving, tapestry) can make a clubhouse authentic, even if it would like to look like a British pub as the redesigned clubhouse of The Old Course at Vilamoura.
I would blend traditional elements with modern design to enchant future guests of all ages.
I believe that adding floor coverings, carpets, and flower pots (basketry?) is beneficial for the renovated clubhouse.
The area above the counter is particularly outdated and reminds us of the 80s. It would be helpful to understand the specific customer personas the renovated clubhouse was designed for.
Despite my critical comments, I believe they have managed to create an elegant pub where we can even discover Portuguese design elements.
The Old Course at Vilamoura: revitalized pub concept for golfers
The Old Course at Vilamoura has unveiled a revitalized pub concept for golfers as part of its extensive clubhouse update.
The new establishment, which aims to complement The Old Course’s historic legacy, will offer comfort food and British pub classics elevated for today.
The drinks menu features refreshing pitcher cocktails, Portuguese wines, and a selection of British and international beers.
The clubhouse will be adorned with vintage touches to offer golfers and visitors a relaxing, lived-in space in which to unwind after a round or simply enjoy a special occasion in convivial surroundings, a community focal point at the beating heart of the historic Old Course.
The second oldest course in the Algarve, part of the Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura collection managed by DETAILS, like many in the portfolio, has undergone significant on-course improvements over the last few months.
The new food and beverage options at the new-look clubhouse will help to elevate the overall experience.
US-based hospitality consulting agency Streetsense has played a key role in the project, delivering the
- overall concept direction,
- market assessment, and
- visual identity,
- alongside menus and interior design direction, to ensure a cohesive concept vision and efficient operations.
The Old Course has undergone a fundamental and sustainable series of updates over the last few months, with the new state-of-the-art clubhouse set to open in November.
The new clubhouse will feature upgrades to the entrance, golf shop, living room, and terrace, creating a classic and elegant atmosphere that complements the course’s legacy.
The golf shop will offer a boutique vision, showcasing top brands in golf apparel and equipment for a curated shopping experience.
The renovations will transform the Old Course into a premium gated club with an elevated experience, offering personalized service, a VIP concierge, and world-class playing conditions.
