Can the new Mavrik Driver outshine the Epic Flash?

By: January 15, 2020

I compared in the title the new Callaway Mavrik Driver ($499; Product at Retail: 1/23/20) with the Epic Flash driver intentionally.

Callaway Golf is probably the first golf equipment manufacturer to use artificial intelligence and machine learning for product development. Their success hasn’t delayed.

In 2019, Epic Flash was the #1 selling driver.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in product development

To understand the benefits of AI usage in product development and why I give kudos to Callaway Golf, I must clarify the essence of this technology.

In the past, the product development process involved creating a golf club prototype of the new design and testing it out in real-world conditions.

This way the developers were able to reach a certain level of performance and ensure quality.

What most of us will enjoy from AI-powered golf equipment that it helps manufacturers like Callaway Golf in error reduction and increasing the chance of reaching higher accuracy with a greater degree of precision.

In the past, Callaway’s engineers created 8-10 of their new golf club prototypes, with the help of the new technology they could afford to create over 15,000 prototypes.

Since Epic Flash driver, Callaway has invested further in advancing their understanding of AI and machine learning.

Let’s see the final version of the new Callaway Mavrik Driver!

Features & benefits – Callaway Golf Mavrik Driver

The foundation of the new Callaway Mavrik Driver is the AI-designed Flash Face SS20 architecture, high-strength FS2S Titanium, & our new Cyclone Aero shape.

The Cyclone shape is shallower from front to back, with a flatter crown, and a sole design that sweeps upward dramatically in the rear to create a markedly higher trailing edge.

The head’s internal and external weighting includes a single, fixed 5g weight positioned at the sole’s back-center, to promote mid-level spin and a moderate draw bias. Available in 9º, 10.5º, and 12º lofts

  • Jailbreak + T2C triaxial carbon crown for ball speed and forgiveness – Two internal Jailbreak bars connect the sole and crown to promote fast ball speed, and the significantly lighter carbon crown allows us to redistribute weight for higher MOI. I hope this is an improved version. The Jailbreak ball speed technology can be found also in the Callaway Rogue driver + in the Callaway Golf Great Berta driver too.
  • High-strength FS2S titanium for consistent performance: New face architecture required FS2S titanium, an extremely strong material that’s 6 grams lighter than traditional titanium to promote optimal speed, forgiveness, and spin robustness.
  • New AI-designed Flash Face SS20 for fast ball speed across the face: it promotes fast ball speeds across a more expansive area in each model and loft.
